Where to hunt black bear in the West
Colorado
Apr–May · Sep–OctColorado has one of the largest black bear populations in the West with over 19,000 bears. OTC archery bear tags are available with no draw. Rifle bear hunters can apply for limited bear licenses by zone. The San Juan Mountains and western slope produce excellent hunting.
Idaho

The panhandle of northern Idaho and the forested central mountains have high bear densities. Both spring bait hunting and fall spot-and-stalk are popular.
Montana

Wyoming

Arizona

Why hire a guide
A licensed outfitter changes your odds.
Bear hunting success depends heavily on knowledge of local bear movement, feeding patterns, and den locations. A guide with a bait program established over years dramatically outperforms DIY public land hunting. In spot-and-stalk states, local knowledge of berry patches, slide areas, and pre-hibernation feeding zones is the difference between a sightseeing trip and a filled tag.
What you get
- ✓Established bait sites (spring, where legal)
- ✓Pre-scouted feeding areas and travel corridors
- ✓Hide setup and wind management
- ✓Local bear population knowledge
- ✓Skinning, fleshing, and hide care
Black Bear hunting — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between spring and fall bear hunting?
Spring hunting targets bears as they emerge from dens — they're hungry, following snow-melt elevation bands, and concentrated near early green-up. Bait hunting is most productive in spring in states where it's legal. Fall hunting targets bears in hyperphagia — the aggressive pre-hibernation feeding phase in September–October — when they're visible on berry patches, slides, and food sources for 8–12 hours a day.
Is bait hunting for black bear legal in western states?
It varies by state. Idaho and Wyoming allow bait hunting. Colorado, Montana, and Arizona prohibit bait hunting. In states without bait, spot-and-stalk is the primary method — glassing open terrain and berry patches to locate feeding bears, then planning a stalk.
Do I need a draw tag for black bear in the West?
Colorado offers OTC bear tags in many zones. Idaho and Montana have OTC bear licenses available. Wyoming has a draw process with good odds. Arizona has both draw and OTC depending on the unit. Regulations change annually — always check current state game agency rules.
How do you field judge a black bear?
The primary indicators are overall body mass, ear position relative to head size, and face shape. Cubs and yearlings have large-looking ears relative to their head, a rounded face, and a small overall frame. A mature boar has small-looking ears, a wide blocky head, and massive shoulders and haunches. Guides are invaluable for real-time field judging.
Is black bear meat worth keeping?
Yes — bear meat is excellent table fare when handled properly. Bears eating berries in the fall have some of the best-tasting meat of any big game animal. The key is immediate and thorough cooling (bears have a thick fat layer that retains heat) and cooking to safe internal temperatures. Many hunters consider fall bear one of their favorite table animals.
