Why hire a guide
A licensed outfitter changes your odds.
Turkey hunting on new ground is exponentially harder than hunting familiar territory. A guide who has roosted specific birds and understands the topography, daily movement patterns, and how gobblers use the terrain in his area will put you in position for a shot that takes most DIY hunters days to achieve. In the West's open, rugged country, that local knowledge is the difference.
What you get
- ✓Pre-season roosting of specific birds
- ✓Private land access in prime areas
- ✓Expert calling and setup
- ✓Knowledge of mountain turkey movement

Turkey hunting — frequently asked questions
What is a Merriam's turkey?
Merriam's is the western subspecies of wild turkey, found in the ponderosa pine forests of the Rocky Mountain region. They are identified by their white-tipped tail feathers (the classic fan) and pure white rump patches — the most visually striking subspecies. Merriam's inhabit mountain terrain from 5,000–10,000 feet elevation.
Do I need a draw tag for western turkey hunting?
In most western states, no. Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Arizona offer OTC spring turkey licenses in most units with no draw required. Some premium Arizona units do require a draw. This makes turkey hunting one of the most accessible spring hunts in the West — you can book a trip and go.
How is western turkey hunting different from eastern turkey hunting?
Mountain terrain changes everything. Merriam's gobblers roost high and fly down to open meadows, parks, and road edges in the morning. The calling cadence and tactics are similar but the terrain demands more physical effort — you may be hiking at altitude to get in position before first light. The open country also allows glassing to locate birds before calling.
When is the best time to hunt Merriam's turkey?
Peak season is mid-April through mid-May, coinciding with peak gobbling activity as hens are nesting and gobblers are actively looking for receptive birds. Early morning is prime — birds are vocal on the roost and throughout the first two hours after fly-down. Late afternoon can also produce as birds move to evening roost sites.
Can I combine a turkey hunt with elk scouting?
Absolutely — and this is one of the best reasons to pursue a western spring turkey. You're hunting in the same country you'll be elk hunting in the fall. A guided turkey hunt in April or May lets you physically scout elk units, identify wallows and bedding areas, and learn the terrain before elk season.
