## Why most hunters ask the wrong questions
When a hunter contacts an outfitter for the first time, they usually ask: "What's your success rate?" and "How much does it cost?"
These are fine questions, but they're not the questions that separate a great hunt from a disappointing one. Here are the 12 questions that actually matter.
## 1. What does "success rate" mean to you?
Success rates are the most abused metric in the outfitting business. Does the outfitter count a hunt as "successful" when the hunter harvested? Or when the hunter had shooting opportunities? Or just when a bull was spotted?
Ask for specifics: "How many of your hunters last season harvested legal animals, and how many booked hunts total?" A reputable outfitter will give you honest numbers.
## 2. What's your guide-to-hunter ratio?
1:1 guiding means you have a dedicated guide every day. 1:2 or 1:3 means you may be hunting with other clients or spending time solo. Neither is wrong, but you should know what you're paying for.
## 3. What's the access type — public or private?
This affects the hunt experience dramatically. Private land hunts mean less competition and more predictable animal patterns. Public land hunts can be excellent but require more physical effort and adaptability.
Many outfitters use a mix. Ask for specifics on where the majority of hunting happens.
## 4. What physical condition do I need to be in?
Honest outfitters will tell you their hunts are physically demanding if they are. Be equally honest about your fitness level. A mismatch here guarantees a bad experience for everyone.
## 5. What's included in the price?
Lodging, meals, guide fees, license fees, meat processing, and trophy care all vary by outfitter. Get a complete itemized list before comparing prices between operations.
## 6. What's your cancellation and refund policy?
Life happens. Understand exactly what you'd lose if you had to cancel 30, 60, or 90 days out. Reputable outfitters have clear written policies.
## 7. How long have your guides been with you?
High guide turnover is a yellow flag. The best outfitters have guides who return season after season because the operation treats them well and produces results.
## 8. Can I talk to past clients?
Any outfitter worth booking with will offer references from recent hunters. If they hesitate, that's your answer.
## 9. How do you handle bad weather or low activity?
Western hunts get hard weather. Ask specifically: what's the plan if conditions shut down a morning? Do they have backup areas? Will you hunt in the rain?
## 10. What size bulls/bucks are you typically seeing?
Ask for photos from the past two or three seasons. Legitimate trophy operations have plenty of photos. Ask what percentage of harvested animals are mature vs. young.
## 11. What's your booking deposit policy?
Most reputable outfitters require a 25–50% deposit to hold your dates. Understand when the remainder is due and what payment methods are accepted.
## 12. Do you have your outfitter license, and is it current?
Every state requires licensed outfitters to carry documentation. HuntScouts verifies licenses for all listed outfitters — but if you're booking elsewhere, ask to see it.
