Where to hunt quail in the West

Arizona — Gambel's Quail

Oct–Feb

Arizona is the top Gambel's quail destination in North America. Prolific in the Sonoran Desert from Tucson south — excellent public land hunting in Coronado National Forest, Buenos Aires NWR, and private ranch access. Year-to-year populations fluctuate with summer monsoon rainfall.

Nevada — Gambel's Quail

Oct–Jan

Southern Nevada holds excellent Gambel's quail populations in the Mojave Desert transition zone. The Boulder City area, Laughlin, and Searchlight regions produce quality hunting. Less competition than Arizona makes Nevada an underrated destination.

Colorado — Scaled Quail

Nov–Jan

Southeastern Colorado holds scaled quail (blue quail) in the dryland agriculture and shortgrass prairie of Baca and Las Animas counties. Unique high-plains hunting with running birds — pointing dogs are essential. A unique western quail experience away from desert hunting.

Idaho — California Quail

Sep–Jan

Southern Idaho holds California quail in brushy canyon country and agricultural edges. The Snake River Canyon area is particularly productive. Excellent dog work in heavy brush with good bird numbers in productive years.

Why hire a guide

A licensed outfitter changes your odds.

Quail hunting is a dog sport — without trained pointing or flushing dogs, you're walking past 80% of the birds. A guide with experienced dogs and knowledge of where the coveys are holding dramatically changes the experience. In Arizona's desert, a guide also provides essential safety support in remote terrain and knows where birds concentrate after summer monsoons. The difference between a DIY quail trip and a guided one is measured in birds flushed.

What you get

  • ✓Trained pointing dogs — essential for quail
  • ✓Knowledge of productive covey habitats
  • ✓Water sources and desert safety support (AZ)
  • ✓Private ranch access in top areas
  • ✓Bird cleaning and packing

Quail hunting — frequently asked questions

What is the best quail hunting in the West?

Arizona's Gambel's quail hunting is widely considered the top quail destination in the West and arguably North America. The Sonoran Desert holds extraordinary bird numbers in good rainfall years. Southern Nevada and New Mexico are strong alternatives. Colorado's scaled quail offers a unique high-plains experience with a different hunting style.

Do I need a draw tag to hunt quail?

No. Quail hunting in all western states requires only a valid hunting license and upland game stamp — no draw, no preference points. This makes it one of the most accessible western hunting experiences available to any licensed hunter.

When is the best time to hunt Gambel's quail?

Late October through December is prime — temperatures are moderate, birds are in large coveys, and morning activity is excellent. January and February can be productive but coveys begin to break up. Extremely hot September and early October hunting is possible but physically demanding. Summer monsoon rainfall (July–August) in Arizona is the key predictor of bird numbers — heavy monsoons equal good bird populations.

What pointing dog breeds work best for western quail?

English Pointer and German Shorthaired Pointer are the most popular quail dogs in the Southwest — they handle desert heat well and cover ground efficiently. Brittanys are excellent in tighter cover. The key attributes for desert quail are heat tolerance, athleticism, and the ability to cover miles of terrain in a day.

How many quail can I shoot per day?

Bag limits vary by state and species. Arizona allows 15 Gambel's quail per day with a 45-bird possession limit — among the most generous limits in the country. Nevada, Colorado, and Idaho have more conservative limits. Always check current state regulations before hunting.
